The manetos have arrived! Andrew & Betsy are part of a little family that needed sprung from a shelter. They were all taken in by Casa de Postas in Spain. Andrew is roughly 9 years old. He'll do best with an older woman who has no cats & no more than only 1 or 2 other smaller dogs. Since arriving to the US he's definitely developed his own funny little personality. If interested in adopting this adorable little guy, fill out an application today! He's currently being fostered in NC but can travel for the right family.
Betsy is a podenco maneto who came to the US in Oct of last year to find her very own forever family. Betsy is roughly 8 yrs old & will need to be placed with other dogs. She absolutely loves other dogs. She would also prefer no cats in her new home. Looking for a small podenco that would do fine with a 4 ft fence? Betsy is the one! She's currently being fostered in NC but can travel for the right family.
This extremely shy girl is Lunara who's 8 years old. A year ago she came from a hunter where his other dogs had badly attacked her. She then was taken in by Finca la Castellana. She's come a long way & still has some work to do in her new home. She'll need someone very experienced and gentle with nervous dogs. She is currently in foster care in PA & is looking for a family who will let her blossom at her own pace. If interested in learning more about her, please send us a message!
This adorable old man is Zar! He’s a 10 yr old podenco mix & was left at the pound in Spain by his hunter with not a care what happened to him. While Zar hasn’t had the greatest past, we’ll ensure that his golden years are the very best! Thanks to SOS Podenco Rescue for caring enough about this senior boy to pull him. Zar is about 50 lbs & looks to me like he may be mixed with lab. While he may not be a young dog, he totally makes up for it with sweetness. Zar does take an inexpensive medication daily. For more information about adopting this sweet guy, please send us a message or fill out an application! He's currently being fostered in IN but can travel for the right family.
This adorable little pair is Tina, the tri-colored bodeguero (think rat terrier) & her puppy Nati. No matter what life threw at them, they always had each other. Tina is 7 & Nati is 2. Tina is also a tripod but doesn't miss that front leg at all. They are extremely bonded and we’d like for them to remain together in a home. They’re both great with other dogs but have decided they don't want to live with cats. They're pretty much perfect & as turnkey as you'll find! They absolutely adore attention & you'll often find them snuggled on the sofa together. They're currently being fostered in VA but can travel for the right family...
Booz is a 6 yr old Breton mix, what we know in the US as a Brittany Spaniel. No, Booz is NOT a sighthound but you'll soon realize why I want to help him. Booz survived on the streets of Seville in Spain until being hit by a car & injuring his jaw & leg. It took 2 weeks to finally capture him & the amazing folks at Casa de Postas took him in & fixed his injuries. He still has a droopy bottom lip due to nerve damage. Sadly Booz has been at Casa de Postas for the past 5 years! I can just imagine how many other dogs he's seen come in and then move on, all while he remains behind. There's just no substitute for living in a home so that's why we brought him to the US to find a forever family of his very own. Initially he's shy of strangers but will warm up with proper time given by his family. He'll benefit from a quiet home & will need at least one other canine companion to follow. If you think you have a spot in your home & heart for this guy, please send us a message! We vow that he'll be invisible no more! He's currently being fostered in MI but can travel for the right family.

UPDATE: Nino has returned to us to look for a family that’s cat-free. He’s now decided that cats aren’t for him. He’s currently in Orange County, CA & we would love to find him a west coast adopter or foster family! Seven year old Nino is considered unadoptable in Portugal! Sadly, pounds & shelters in Portugal are full of dogs just like little Nino, spending months & often years there with no hope of finding a family. While he may be small in size (only 17 lbs), he has a huge heart! He’s good with dogs & kids but is leash reactive on walks so will need some training. He also could easily be an only dog! He takes Zonisamide to control seizure every 12 hours which costs roughly $25/month. This little pint sized love bug is currently in CA & available for adoption! If you’d like to be interviewed by Nino as a potential family, please fill out an application on our website! Thanks to Bring Portuguese Podengos to Light for helping Nino on his journey to forever.
Bobby Brown is quite a clown! At only 3 years old & 18 lbs, he still has many years ahead of him & we want them to NOT be surrounded by shelter walls. As I’ve said before, the people in Portugal don’t like the wire-haired dogs & adoption there is usually quite difficult, if impossible, for these dogs. The dogs of Portugal are so overlooked & have very little in the way of assistance. One dog seems like a drop in an ocean but what we DO know is that it makes a difference for that one dog, in this case our adorable little Bobby. And thanks to Bring Portuguese Podengos to Light for always being there for them & for alerting us to the ones in the most need or in the most danger at the various pounds. Bobby is a Portuguese Podengo, is good with other dogs, & is quite active so an energetic family who likes to walk or hike would be fabulous for him. He would probably do better with at least one other canine companion in the house & will need a fenced yard to release some energy but if you take a few good walks a day, he would be fine without a yard. He's currently bring fostered in IL but can travel for the right family! If interested in adopting this little pocket rocket, fill out an application!
Continuing our quest to help black dogs, we present to you Bessie! This gorgeous 7 year old girl just couldn’t be sweeter & has a great personality! She’s about 26 lbs & is good with other dogs. She’s on an inexpensive medication & is currently at Finca la Castellana in Spain. Through our partnership with Podenco Friends, we were made aware of this girl & would love to help her find her forever family. We plan to bring her over in the new year. If interested in learning more, please send us a message or fill out an application on our website!
Who’s looking for a dog with a load of personality & charm? Little Miss Roma will charm your socks off! She’s not even 2 years old yet but totally overlooked in Spain. She walks great on leash & loves other dogs, as well as people. She would prefer a home without cats though. Our friends at Podenco Friends were asked to help with her & we in turn offered to bring her to the US to find a family. She’s not a large podenco but does need to lose a little weight (don’t we all?!). If interested in making little Roma’s dream come true, fill out an application on our website to meet this gem! She's curently being fostered in IL but can travel for the right family.
The handsome Ares is a Spanish Mastin & the first one for the Sanctuary! This gorgeous 2 yr old boy is considered special needs because he either needs to live as an only dog or with just one or two females & also no cats. He also will need a secure fenced yard for exercise.
He's currently working with a trainer in Spain & was rescued thanks to our friends at Proyecto Berta! If you'd like to learn more about him & possibly foster or adopt this big, gorgeous boy, please send us a message!
Haley was rescued along with Vera & Sue in Spain. All three of these girls were in horrible condition both physically and emotionally. Haley had a huge hygroma on her side that's since been removed. She will need a quiet family who can accept her for the shy homebody that she is. She would be great for someone who's retired and stays home a lot with few visitors.
If you'd like to learn more about this special girl, please send us a message.
Who needs a gorgeous little fuzzy red headed girl in their life?! This is Xana & she’s spent more than half her life in rescue! She’s now 2 years old & has been in rescue for over a year. Hard to believe but true! We would love to bring her to the US in November but need a foster family to step to the plate so she can make that next step towards a family of her very own. If interested in fostering or adopting her, please send us a message! We know for sure that she’s not chicken friendly but not sure about cats. I’m going to say that she probably won’t be cat friendly. This lovely girl is being sponsored in Portugal by Bring Portuguese Podengos to Light! .
This fuzzy little girl is Nikita & she’s a roughly 6 year old Portuguese Podengo with wise old eyes that could probably tell some sad stories. The dogs in Portugal are treated just as horribly as they are in Spain unfortunately. Nikita is a sweet & snuggly girl who just wants to find a forever family of her own. She’s still in a shelter in Portugal & we hope to bring her to the US this fall with the help of Bring Portuguese Podengos to Light! If interested in fostering or adopting her, please send us a message or better yet, fill out an application on our website!
